How do we get oil?
Oil is formed from the residue of animals and plants which lived millions of years ago in a marine environment before the dinosaurs. After all these years, the remains were covered by layers of sand and silt. Heating and pressure from these layers helped the remains turn into what we know as crude oil. The origin of the word petroleum means “rock oil” or “oil from the earth”

This crude oil is a yellow-to-black liquid usually found in areas called reservoirs. We need teamwork from scientists and engineers who explore a chosen area by studying rock samples from the earth. If it seems good they start drilling. After the hole, a structure called “derrick” is built to keep the tools. When finished, the drill well will bring the oil to the surface.
